The 37-year-old man was attacked at Eyton Boat Ramp in Bloomfield, south of Cooktown, at around 5.30pm local time yesterday. He freed himself from the crocodile and was airlifted to Cairns Hospital. At present, the health condition of the tourist is satisfactory.

A tourist and his dog are out for a walk in the evening. Joshua Patterson, general manager of the Jabalbina Aboriginal Corporation, said the dog was attacked by a large crocodile as he approached the waterhole to give him a drink.

The crocodile attacked the leg of the tourist. But he managed to free himself from the crocodile and crawled to safety. He immediately contacted Patterson’s bodyguards for help. Patterson explained that the bodyguard intervened in time and contacted emergency services.

Patterson said this is an area known to be home to crocodiles. Going to the water’s edge is always dangerous. Especially during this time when the rivers are flooded. He also clarified that special vigilance should be observed in the evenings.

People should be aware of crocodiles and take such dangers very seriously. He also warned people to be careful to stay safe.

Meanwhile Wujal Wujal Aboriginal Shire Council Mayor Bradley Creek said he was not aware of a particular crocodile presence near the Ayton boat ramp. But he said he spotted a huge crocodile at the Wujal Wujal boat ramp, about 8 km away.

The Queensland Department of Environment and Science said it was aware of the crocodile’s presence in the area and had dispatched a team to investigate.
