BOLZANO. No Austrian citizenship, at least for now, but a Cross of Merit from the Land Tyrol for the 105-year-old South Tyrolean Hermine Orianwho has a dream of an almost “historical” nature: “I was born Austrian and I want to die Austrian”, she has reiterated on several occasions, but Vienna has never accepted her request.

Hermine Aloisia Mair was born on April 23, 1919 in Cortaccia. South Tyrol was still Austrian at the time, although already occupied by the Italian army, and only a few months later, with the signing of the Saint Germain Agreement, it would officially pass to Italy. Under fascism he taught German in clandestine schools, the so-called “catacomb schools”.

With her marriage she became Mrs. Orian and then the mother of two children. Today she lives with one of them in Scena, above Merano. For about ten years her great-grandmother has been pursuing the dream of becoming Austrian again. The Tyrolean patriotic movement Andreas Hofer Federalwhich has long since adopted the cause, now announces that Orian is among those awarded the important honor of the Austrian state, scheduled for August 15 at the Hofburg in Innsbruck.
