Seoul: 149 people died in a stampede during the Halloween celebration in the South Korean capital of Seoul. More than 150 people were injured. The incident took place around 10.30 pm local time. The accident was caused by people crowding the narrow road leading to Itaewon, the main festival site. Many of the injured are in critical condition. The fire department said the death toll could rise further.

It is believed that people caused a stampede after word spread that someone famous was in a nearby bar. The collision and panic occurred when those who were on the top of the ramp began to fall down. According to unofficial estimates, around one lakh people came to participate in the festivities in the region. The Halloween celebration, which was held without masks in public for the first time after Covid, resulted in a huge tragedy. After the accident, the authorities asked the people to return to their homes as soon as possible. President Yoon Suk Yeol instructed the authorities to prepare all the necessary facilities for the rescue mission. More than 150 fire tenders reached the spot.

Artificial respiration and first aid were given to the injured on the road and elsewhere. Many people fell to the ground after being pushed from behind. Most of the deaths are due to trampling, strangulation and suffocation. More than 400 health workers have been deployed for emergency services.

This is South Korea’s worst disaster since a boat capsized in 2014, killing 300 people.
