Afternoon Shootings Interrupt Crown Heights Celebration
Festivities surrounding the annual Caribbean culture celebration in Brooklyn were disrupted Monday afternoon when gunfire erupted in separate incidents near the parade route. According to police reports, a man was shot in the butt in front of 800 Nostrand Avenue at Saint John’s Place, just north of Eastern Parkway. Officers quickly took a suspect into custody at the scene and recovered a firearm.
A short time later, additional gunfire broke out near Eastern Parkway and Kingston Avenue. A woman was shot in the leg, and a 19-year-old man was struck in the legs. Investigators searching for the perpetrators said two suspects fled toward Albany Avenue, with one wearing a gray hoodie and blue jeans and the other wearing a white shirt. All three afternoon victims were transported to Kings County Hospital and are expected to survive.
Pre-Dawn Stabbings Mark Violent Morning Lead-Up
The afternoon gunfire followed a wave of violent encounters hours earlier during the pre-dawn J’Ouvert Festival, which began at 6 a.m. and ran until the main parade kicked off. Police reported that three men were stabbed and two others slashed in separate street encounters in Crown Heights.
Emergency services responded to Utica Avenue and Carroll Street, where three victims sustained serious injuries. A 32-year-old man and a 23-year-old man were stabbed in the neck, while a 36-year-old man was stabbed in the face. First responders rushed the older victims to Kings County Hospital, where the 32-year-old was initially listed in critical condition before being stabilized by late afternoon. A 20-year-old victim with a slashed chin arrived at the hospital via private means. Minutes later, around 6 a.m., a 25-year-old man was slashed in the face near Eastern Parkway and Nostrand Avenue and taken to Interfaith Medical Center. Police reported no arrests in connection with the morning stabbings.
NYPD Security Deployment and Early Parade Curtailment
City officials and police commanders implemented stringent security protocols ahead of the holiday events, establishing checkpoints with metal detectors and barring bags along the parade route. Thousands of police officers flooded the streets surrounding Eastern Parkway in one of the department’s largest deployments of the year.
The scheduling of the event was also altered to mitigate historically recurring violence. City officials mandated an earlier conclusion time of 5:30 p.m. for the parade. The violence broke out less than two hours before the event was scheduled to wrap up.

Detectives continue to investigate the motives and connections behind both the morning stabbings and the afternoon shootings. While one suspect was apprehended immediately following the first shooting on Nostrand Avenue, manhunts remain active for the individuals involved in the Kingston Avenue shooting and the multiple J’Ouvert knife attacks.
