More than 180 people suffered from gastrointestinal illnesses aboard a Royal Caribbean cruise ship. This is the second eruption on board the “Radiance of the Seas” this year.
Of the 2,172 passengers on the Radiance of the Seas, 180 guests and three employees became ill. They suffered from symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal cramps, headaches and muscle pain.
The ship was en route to Alaska with stops in Vancouver and Seaward. The trip started on September 20th and ended on September 27th. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the illness was caused by salmonella. After the outbreak, the cruise line collected stool samples from gastrointestinal disease cases for testing.

High attention to the outbreak on cruise ships
This is the second eruption of the “Radiance of the Seas” this year. In April, 70 people on board were infected with norovirus. Royal Caribbean told USA Today, “To maintain an environment that supports the highest health and safety standards aboard our ships, we implement rigorous cleaning procedures, many of which far exceed public health guidelines.” Of the 10 outbreaks on cruise ships this year, three occurred on Royal Caribbean ships.
Such infections are not unusual, said Dr. Sarah E. Hochman, a hospital epidemiologist, told USA Today. “They actually affect every type of gathering place, and something like this also happens on a much smaller scale between families and family contacts.” But these cases have not attracted global attention the way a cruise ship did.
