In response to the emergency phase due to drought in Catalonia, the cruise industry has agreed with the Port Authority of Barcelona (Spain) not supply water during this period, which will imply limitations on water consumption in the region.

The port of Barcelona, together with the port community and the cruise industry, has been implementing initiatives to save water in recent years. As a result, the cruise industry has significantly reduced its water supply in the port enclave.

According to data from the Port Authority, in 2022, cruise ships were supplied with water in less than 30% of calls, compared to the 50% recorded in 2017. Those responsible for the facility estimate that cruise ships represent only 0.09% of the water consumption of the city of Barcelona.

Despite these efforts, in coordination with the Cruise Lines International Association (Clia), the port has agreed that, during the drought emergency phase of the Generalitat of Catalonia, the shipping companies operating in the port will only supply water in emergencies. This agreement will be revoked once the situation returns to normal.

On the other hand, the Port of Barcelona has registered notable progress in the supply of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) to vessels during 2023, carrying out a total of 199 operations with a volume of 143,000 m³, which doubles the figure for the year. reference 2021.
