Burkina/Norbert Zongo file: CSOs demand the extradition of the main accused

Ouagadougou, December 13, 2023 (AIB) – The coordination of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) of Burkina Faso, demanded Wednesday in a letter delivered to the French embassy in Burkina Faso, the extradition of François Compaoré, main accused in the assassination of the investigative journalist and his companions, 25 years after their disappearance.

“Mr. President (of the French Republic), this mechanical orchestration that you are carrying out in complicity with the organs of the European Union to delay the extradition of François Compaoré at will, has ended up exhausting the patience of our people. Therefore, I am pleased to hereby demand the extradition of Mr. François Compaoré as soon as possible to avoid pushing our people into anger,” demanded the coordination of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) of Burkina Faso in a letter read in front of the French embassy.

In this letter addressed to the President of the French Republic, the coordination of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) of Burkina Faso estimated that the Burkinabè government has provided all the guarantees of independent justice, an apolitical trial, an assurance of security and respect for the physical integrity of the accused.

According to her, all of these guarantees provided by the country led France to issue a decree extraditing François Compaoré in February 2020.

“This decision was received with great satisfaction by our country by raising hope for a manifestation of the truth long awaited by the grieving families in particular by all the Burkinabè people in general,” noted the note.

However, the coordination of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) of Burkina Faso regrets that three years after this decision, François Compaoré, is still kept in France “under the fallacious pretext that our transitional government has not reiterated the guarantees for an impartial and fair trial to your liking.”

For her, this attitude sounds like condescension and contempt towards the institutions of Burkina Faso and its people who are resolutely committed to their complete and total sovereignty.

After the rejection of the extradition of François Compaoré by the European Court of Human Rights, only France can appeal again.

The famous journalist Norbert Zongo and three of his companions were killed on December 13, 1998, while he was investigating the suspicious death of David Ouédraogo, driver of Mr. Compaoré, himself younger brother of the president of Faso at the time .
