An earthquake of magnitude 3.9 on the Richter scale shook five municipalities in the province of Santiago de Cuba (east) at noon this Friday, with no reports of human or material damage at the moment, reported the National Seismological Service (SSNC). ) of the island.

This is the second perceptible earthquake recorded this week and the fifth so far this year in the country.

This time, the telluric movement took place at 12:49 local time (16:49 GMT), its hypocenter was located at a depth of 11.7 kilometers and it was felt in the main municipality of Santiago Cuba and those of San Luis, Tercer Frente, Julio A Mella and Palma Soriano, specified the SSNC.

Last Wednesday, a magnitude 4 earthquake was reported in the southeastern province of Granma (neighboring Santiago de Cuba) and was felt in its municipalities Bartolomé Masó and Pilón.

The previous ones, one of magnitude 3.5 and another two of 5.5, were reported in February in the eastern province of Guantánamo, and the special municipality of Isla de la Juventud.

The most important seismic zones in Cuba are found in the eastern zone and are related to a fault at the limit of the North American plate, to which Cuba belongs, and the continuation of the northern fault of the neighboring island of Hispaniola, to the southeast of Cuba.

Last year, 13 perceptible earthquakes were registered in Cuba, almost all in the eastern provinces.

The island has registered several large earthquakes in recent decades.

Among them, the one that occurred on May 25, 1992, of magnitude 6.9, which was felt in the eastern half of the country, and the one of January 28, 2020, of magnitude 7.1, which occurred in the immediate vicinity, stand out. from the Cayman Islands but was felt throughout Cuba.
