The probability of at least one hurricane originating and intensifying in the Caribbean was estimated at 85%, with a 70% chance that one from the Atlantic would also penetrate this area.

As for the risks for Cuba, they are particularly high, with an 80% chance of being affected by at least one hurricane, and a 90% chance of facing a tropical cyclone.

Conditions favoring such an active season include significantly elevated sea surface temperatures in the tropical North Atlantic, observed from June 2023 to April 2024.

For reference, last year forecasts anticipated between 12 to 17 named storms and between five and nine hurricanes, of which between one and four would reach categories 3, 4 or 5.

Given the omen of an even more active cyclone season, the island’s inhabitants are preparing to face the challenges that these natural phenomena may present.

In Cuba, the event of a simple storm represents a serious danger, taking into account the poor state of buildings, roads, among other things.
