In the remainder of April and during the month of May, Cuba will operate with limited levels of fuel, but as the suppliers begin to fulfill their commitments with the island, the main services will be able to be covered, the Minister of Energy and Mines of Cuba assured this Monday. the Greater of the Antilles, Vicente de la O Levy.

During a special address today, the official reiterated what was recently explained by President Miguel Díaz-Canel related to the breach of commitments by fuel suppliers to Cuba, as a fundamental cause of the shortage of diesel and gasoline that is being experienced these days in the caribbean country.

They have had problems with the inputs to produce and this has had an impact on the breach of these commitments, he explained.

To this we must add that although there is an energy situation worldwide, in Cuba it will always be more acute due to the blockade, he assured.

According to the minister, it is very difficult for the island to obtain ships to transport fuel, seek financing, and comply with some requirements that are normal in fuel contracts.

Due to the lack of fuel and stable supplies, it was decided to distribute reduced fuel capacities, compared to what is normally consumed in one day, he said.

“A reduced capacity will continue to be taken out during the remaining days of April, which is quite low, which is why the queues we see at the service centers,” he acknowledged. However, he assured that the situation tends to improve based on decisions and negotiations, suppliers that are already fulfilling their commitments.

According to Vicente de la O Levy, these negotiations and the fulfillment of the commitments by the sellers are part of the reasons why the information was delayed.

“Today we have an improvement that does not mean that we are going to have fuel as we had in 2017, 2018 or a few months ago,” he said.

In the remainder of April and in the month of May, fuel will be partially released, in a reduced way so that the supply does not touch zero and vital services can be guaranteed, he warned.

The minister pointed out that diesel suppliers are also beginning to fulfill their supplies, something that will allow the country not to touch zero and that the main services in the country can be covered.

The fuel shortage in Cuba has become palpable especially in recent weeks. Since then, the queues at the service centers have lasted for days and the amount of gasoline and diesel sold per person has been reduced, among other local measures.
