Cuban actresses Eslinda Núñez and Isabel Santos were honored as part of the celebrations for the 65th anniversary of the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC).

With this celebration, which took place at the Yara cinema, a day of celebrations for the state institution began in Havana, in which tributes were also paid to other filmmakers, actors and personnel of the seventh art in general on the island.

During this ‘Festival for Cuban Cinema’, Núñez, who holds the National Film Award, received the Third Degree Lázaro Peña order, awarded by the Council of State at the proposal of the Cuban Workers’ Union.

For her part, the popular “Clandestinos” actress received the Jesús Menéndez medal for her “relevant work merits,” according to state media.

Santos was joined in this decoration by other art personalities in Cuba such as Dolores Calviño, Lisette Vila and Víctor Domínguez. In addition, another group of ICAIC workers received the Raúl Gómez García order and the Distinction for National Culture.

The occasion was used by the president of the ICAIC, Alexis Triana, to talk about “the effort made in different provinces of the country in the restoration of movie and video theaters, as well as the challenges that lie ahead for the Cuban film industry.” .

Despite the complaints of some artists at important cinema events on the island, Triana insisted that possible obstacles and bureaucracy must be “overcome in order to achieve a rebirth of national cinema.”

At the event, the film “Cuban Songbook” (1939), by Jaime Salvador, was presented, and the Rodrigo Pratts Lyric Theater, in Holguín, presented a show in tribute to the composer Ernesto Lecuona.

This ‘Festival for Cuban Cinema’ will last in Havana until March 30. During those days, according to state media, a total of 67 nationally produced works will be released, including films, documentaries and animated films. In addition, another 40 films will be screened, 22 of which have been restored recently.
