Judicial Injustice in Cuba: The Fight of Cuban Jean Carlos Torres López for the Freedom of His Father

Jean Carlos Torres López, a 20-year-old Cuban citizen, has raised his voice against what he describes as injustices perpetrated by his country’s judicial bodies. In a letter addressed to various international institutions, including the Vatican and the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), Torres López makes a fervent call to action to seek justice for his father, Juan Carlos Torres Campillo.

The case of Juan Carlos Torres Campillo focuses on his imprisonment under Resolution 60/2021, cause 44/2020, a file that, according to his son, has been in the preparatory phase for a prolonged period. Torres López argues that, despite the legal reforms introduced by the new Cuban Constitution, the judicial system remains plagued by arbitrariness that results in serious injustices for citizens.

The young man reports that his father, a resident of Tenerife #162 apt 6 e/ Rastro y Carmen, Centro Habana, has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for crimes that he claims he did not commit. Despite presenting complaints to the various State bodies, the response has been constant: the sanction imposed is justified.

In his letter, Torres López questions the validity of a judicial system that ignores evidence that would exonerate his father and that seems to favor accusatory discourse without solid foundations. Furthermore, he highlights an incident during his father’s third oral hearing, where the crucial testimony of Interior Ministry Major Eduardo Moya Jerez was ignored, which could have shed light on the innocence of Juan Carlos Torres Campillo.

Despite the legal efforts made, including the presentation of evidence that was dismissed due to alleged manipulations in the file, Torres López expresses his frustration at the lack of progress and favorable results. He points out the irony of a system that appears to disregard constitutional provisions and legal regulations established to ensure justice and human rights.

In a desperate gesture, Torres López reveals that his father has gone on a hunger strike as a form of protest, increasing concern for his health and well-being. Appealing to the compassion and intervention of the international organizations to which he turns, Torres López hopes that his father’s case will receive the necessary attention and his release will finally be achieved.
