The Cuban Film Posters collection owned by the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry, an essential part of its documentary heritage and of the nation, received Memory of the World status this Tuesday, after the United Nations Educational Organization, Science and Culture (UNESCO), will approve this year its inclusion in the International Registry of this Program, created in 1992.

A total of 2,230 documentary units (51×76 cm), from between 1960 and 1990, on paper or cardboard, make up this collection that is an expression of the graphics that have accompanied our cinematography, designed by Alfredo Rostgaard, Eduardo Muñoz, Rafael Morante, Antonio Fernández, René Azcuy, Raúl Martínez and Antonio Pérez, among others.

The endorsement granted by the international organization recognizes those emblematic of films such as Strawberry and Chocolate, Clandestine, Vampires in Havana y Lucy. Some of those in the exhibition, since the late 1960s, won awards in international salons and were part of private and state collections, also leaving the Cuban public an unmatched legacy of sensitive appreciation of art.

Anne Lemaistre and Dulce Buergo, director of the regional office of UNESCO and of the Cuban National Commission of UNESCO, respectively, asserted that this distinction further commits everyone to the safeguarding, preservation and search for alternatives so that access to this heritage is well received by the communities and within the framework of events like this.

The curator and Graphics specialist at the Cuban Cinematheque, Sara Vega, highlighted what this recognition represents for all the Cuban designers who accompany films from graphic art and it was Nelson Ponce, a famous professional in this discipline, who thanked on behalf of all those who today allow this collection to grow with each work that is done.

The occasion was propitious to inaugurate the Cuban Film Cartel Center, in the space where the Film Archive used to be (23, between 8 and 10, in the area of El Vedado, municipality of Plaza), as a space for discussion and work for visual artists, as well as permanent and temporary exhibitions.

It is the second time that a proposal presented by the Cuban Cinematheque is registered in the Program. Previously, in July 2009, the negatives from Noticiero Icaic Latinoamericano received the condition.
