José Martí, a Latin American writer who played an important role in Cuba’s liberation struggle, was born on January 28, 1853 in Havana, Cuba. Through his writings and political activities, he raised awareness against Spanish colonial rule in Cuba.

His poems and revolutionary articles inspired the rebels who fought for Cuban independence. Marty was sentenced to prison and later deported to Spain.

Later, in 1877, Martí, hiding his identity, went to Cuba under a different name, and continued to participate in the struggle for Cuban liberation. Along with the Cuban Revolutionary Army, he led attacks against Spanish forces. Finally, on May 19, 1895, Martí was killed by Spanish forces at the Battle of Dos Rios.
