The Cuban photographer Moník Molinet will inaugurate her personal exhibition “Masculinities” this April 6, at 7:00 pm, at the Cuban Art Factory (FAC).

From her Instagram profile, the artist assured: “I couldn’t be more excited to share this news with you and that you will soon be able to witness my pieces and the conception of this concept in the physical space, the result of months of work.”

In addition to its artistic content, the purpose of the show is to continue “the struggle to deconstruct the idea of masculinity as it has been historically established,” according to Molinet.

“Masculinities” is made up of 13 pieces of various dimensions and includes two audiovisuals where the protagonists of the images are documented. In addition, the public will be able to interact with a white wall where they can take pictures with a flower that they can share with the hashtag #Hombreconflores.

During a press conference held in Havana, the photographer commented that this project arose as an exploration exercise that intervened in public spaces to photograph the male gender with a flower in his ear in support of the fight for non-violence against women. .

“From my position as an activist, I am in favor of gender issues taking over the contemporary scene, this idea will foster debate and people will be able to approach the issue from a position that they did not contemplate before,” Molinet said, according to the state agency Prensa Latina. .

The author of the sample extended to the aforementioned medium that the idea is to replicate the exercise that transgresses the most hegemonic conception of the genre, while contributing to create a debate from the social networks of the spectators who attend the FAC.

Although the photographer considered that the Cuban setting is very common in her work, she also stated that the series has a lot of international involvement because masculinity is not an exclusive issue on the island.

For its part, the newspaper La Vanguardia published a note recalling when in September 2022 the Cuban photographer “blew up Twitter in 24 hours. And all for some flowers”.

That was the moment when Moník shared his project on the networks and in less than a day, the publication exceeded five million views. “However, the complaints – or rather the misogynistic and homophobic prejudices – of those who saw an ‘attack on men’ in these images, caused Twitter to suspend their account,” the Spanish outlet expanded.
