At the stroke of noon this Thursday, the Cuban police detained the renowned writer and journalist Jorge Fernández Era, his wife assured on social networks.

According to the brief text of his partner on Facebook, Era “was taken today, at 12:30 pm, to the Aguilera Police Unit, on Calzada de Luyanó and Porvenir,” which caused dozens of comments and reactions on the mentioned social network.

Other publications from sources close to the family indicate that Fernández “was circulated”, a police procedure for the search for people.

Era, who has already been interviewed on other occasions by the police for his critical comments towards the government, recently stated that the cause of these conversations was that he criticizes reality and uses sarcasm to say what he believes.

Just a few days ago, the writer appeared as a guest in an interview with filmmaker Ian Padrón on the Right to Reply program, a space where topics of interest regarding the island’s social, economic and political news are debated.

In that dialogue with Padrón, Era shared his impressions on critical issues such as freedom of expression over decades in the country; the dialogue between artists and the government; the events of July 11, 2021 in which anti-government protests took place on the island; his opinion on power in Cuba, among others.

Fernández Era graduated with a degree in Journalism in 1991 and his work has included positions as a journalist, editor and proofreader, as well as leadership roles at the Centro de Estudios Martianos and other institutions.

He has published several books of short stories and his texts are also included in compilations of various publishers in the country and internationally.
