  • Brazilian coach Luizomar de Moura has been hired by the Cuban Volleyball Federation (FCV).
  • The four-year agreement aims to revitalize the national women’s team.
  • The project includes international tournaments, new equipment, and infrastructure improvements.
  • Cuba dominated Olympic volleyball with three consecutive titles from 1992 to 2000.
  • Moura will debut with the team at the Norceca Pan American Cup in Colima, Mexico, from August 3 to 10.

HAVANA — In a significant move to restore its past dominance in women’s volleyball, Cuba has officially announced the hiring of renowned Brazilian coach Luizomar de Moura. The Cuban Volleyball Federation (FCV) confirmed the appointment this Friday, marking an ambitious step in revitalizing a team that once reigned supreme on the Olympic stage.

Moura’s arrival, a four-year commitment, is part of an empowerment project backed by the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB). This initiative aims not just to bring back glory, but to fundamentally transform Cuban women’s volleyball. The project has received the full backing of the National Sports Institute (INDER), the Cuban Olympic Committee, and the National Volleyball Commission.

“The objective is not only to compete, but structurally transform the Cuban female volleyball from its foundations,” stated an FCV release.

The agreement is comprehensive, covering the technical direction of the senior team, participation in international tournaments, acquisition of new equipment, and improvements to infrastructure at the National Volleyball School. The FIVB is funding these enhancements.

Moura, who boasts extensive experience with youth, cadet, and club teams, will immediately join the squad for the Norceca Pan American Cup. The tournament is set to take place in Colima, Mexico, from August 3 to 10, serving as the initial platform for the team’s relaunch.

Cuba’s national women’s volleyball team once epitomized excellence, securing three consecutive Olympic titles in Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996, and Sydney 2000. However, in recent decades, its international prominence has waned. The sports authorities are banking on Moura’s expertise to reverse this trend and build a foundation for future success.

The FCV expressed gratitude to the FIVB for its crucial support and to Coach Moura for his dedication and enthusiasm. “We are sure that their knowledge will leave the balances that we have proposed,” the federation stated. This strategic move signifies Cuba’s commitment to not only achieving short-term results but also undertaking a deep reconstruction of its most historically successful team sport.
