The Clay Holmes Gamble: Ground Balls and Recovery
Holmes has been sidelined since May 15, when a 111.1-mph comebacker off the bat of Spencer Jones fractured his right fibula. Despite the injury, he was a standout for the Mets early in the season, posting a 2.39 ERA across nine starts.
Hoyer’s attraction to Holmes is rooted in “pitch shape.” Holmes is a ground-ball specialist, boasting a 55.8% groundball rate since 2025, which ranks fifth among qualified starters. This profile is designed to maximize the Cubs’ defense, which currently leads the Majors with a 56 fielding run value. By pairing a sinkerballer with an elite infield, Chicago is attempting to minimize home runs and maximize efficiency.
Holmes is currently on the 60-day injured list but is nearing a return.
Jefferson Rojas and the Cost of “Win-Now”
Rojas, ranked as the No. 63 prospect in baseball by MLB Pipeline, had shown significant promise at Double-A Knoxville, posting a 114 wRC+ in 390 plate appearances this year.
The departure of Rojas is part of a broader pattern this deadline. Hoyer has moved away from the conservatism of previous years, trading six of the team’s top 30 prospects—including Moises Ballesteros—to acquire immediate talent. This shift indicates a clear mandate: the current core is viewed as capable of winning now, and the front office is willing to deplete the farm system to capitalize on that window.
Rotation Reinforcements: Gausman and the “White Whale”
Holmes is not the only major arm arriving in Chicago. For Hoyer, Gausman was a white whale type target
he had pursued for years early in the pitcher’s career.
The addition of Gausman and Holmes transforms a rotation that had been surviving on the resilience of Shota Imanaga, Matthew Boyd, Colin Rea, and Javier Assad. With David Peterson already contributing after a June trade with the Mets, the Cubs have built a diversified staff. They also added righty Braxton Garrett from the Marlins and reliever Ryan Zeferjahn from the Angels to provide further depth.
The Road to October and the Dodgers Obstacle
These moves are specifically calibrated for a postseason collision with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Cubs are currently 6.5 games back in the NL Central, making a Brewers comeback unlikely, but they remain in a strong position to hold a wild card spot. to a deal for the Tigers’ star.
Beyond pitching, the addition of 32-year-old Tyrone Taylor provides a right-handed bat for the bench. Taylor has hit 10 home runs in 159 plate appearances in 2026 and is expected to provide a tactical alternative to Ian Happ, who has struggled against left-handed pitching this season.
The financial stakes for Holmes remain a point of interest. He is under a three-year, $38MM contract signed in December 2024, but holds a $12 million player option for 2027, which he is likely to turn down. Given his successful transition to a starter in 2025—where he went 12-8 with a 3.53 ERA over 165⅔ innings—it is widely expected that Holmes will opt out of that deal to seek a more lucrative contract in the future.
