“Flappy Bird” is back: The mobile gaming hit from 2014 is set to appear in a new guise. Fans can look forward to expanded game modes and new features.

The cult classic “Flappy Bird” is about to make a comeback. The newly founded Flappy Bird Foundation has secured the rights to the popular mobile game and announced a new edition on X for fall 2024. The game will initially be released for web browsers, with iOS and Android versions to follow in 2025.

The original “Flappy Bird” was created in 2013 by Vietnamese developer Dong Nguyen and experienced a surprising success in early 2014. Within a very short time, the game was downloaded over 50 million times and is said to have generated five-figure advertising revenues every day. Despite this, Nguyen surprisingly removed the game from the app stores in 2014 because he feared it could be addictive.

The new edition promises more than just a simple re-release of the original. According to the Flappy Bird Foundation’s announcement video, new game modes are planned, including an adventure mode and “massive multiplayer challenges.” In addition, new characters are intended to enrich the gaming experience.

As the Flappy Bird Foundation points out, original developer Dong Nguyen is not involved in this project. The trademark rights were acquired by a US company called Gametech Holdings after a trademark application filed by Nguyen was apparently contested. While Nguyen has not commented, Michael Roberts of the Flappy Bird Foundation expressed optimism: “We have big plans for our little bird.”

In addition to the rights to “Flappy Bird,” the Flappy Bird Foundation now also owns the rights to the lesser-known game “Piou Piou vs Cactus.” This game was allegedly the inspiration for “Flappy Bird,” although Nguyen denied this. Kek, the developer of “Piou Piou vs Cactus,” is one of the founding members of the Foundation. He is looking forward to working with fans and developers to create the comeback.
