Cumulative reports indicate a problem with the power adapter of the new RTX 4090 cards that simply melts during use

More and more reports on the web, from several different sources, indicate a problem with the 16-pin power adapter of new video cards based on the GeForce RTX 4090, NVIDIA’s new flagship card.

The site Tom’s Hardware has already reported on four cases in which it was reported that during the use of the computer, at least in some cases during a prolonged game, a burning smell was felt from the system – and/or it reacted as required in an overheating situation – and after an examination it turned out that the power cable of the cards was burnt.

Apparently the problem in all the reported cases stems from the need for an adapter that turns a 4×8 pin connection into the 1×16 connection required for the new card. The actual implementation poses a danger to the system, the report claims, to the point of a fire.

At least in this case it is a computer purchased from a computer manufacturer, as far as the system is already ready and configured, and not a computer built independently.

To NVIDIA’s credit, it can be said that it reacted immediately after the publication of the first case, which very quickly turned into another one – and as mentioned, it now turns out that it may be some kind of phenomenon after all. “We are investigating the reports. We are in contact with the first owners and will contact the other owners for more information,” the company said.
