The researchers observed that populations of demersal species seemed to be barely affected by heat waves occurring in their environment. A mysterious phenomenon.

Like episodes of “terrestrial” heat waves, marine heat waves are increasing in the light of global warming. Coral bleaching, disappearance of algae and reef fish, displacement of species over hundreds of kilometres… the impact of these phenomena on coastal ecosystems is causing concern. But their consequences on species living in the depths remain unknown.

In a study published Wednesday in the scientific journal Nature, an international team of researchers has studied the effects of these sea heat waves on demersal species, in other words fish living just above the ocean floor (unlike pelagic species, which live near the surface, such as herring or anchovies). Among them, there are many fished species such as cod, hake or sole.
