According to a new survey by the Sinus Institute on behalf of the Barmer health insurance company, around 16 percent of adolescents were affected by bullying on the Internet last year. In 2021 it was still 14 percent.

► Around 2,000 young people between the ages of 14 and 17 were surveyed for the study last year. More than every second young person has witnessed someone being a victim of cyberbullying in their immediate environment. In comparison, this value was 43 percent in 2021.

Only 28 percent of those surveyed said they had never experienced cyber bullying themselves – that’s four percentage points less than two years earlier.

Bullying alert via WhatsApp

According to a survey, 52 percent of the young people affected have experienced cyberbullying via the messenger service WhatsApp. TikTok and Instagram follow with 34 and 33 percent, respectively.

► Insults are the most common form (74 percent), followed by spreading rumors (52 percent) and exclusion from groups (33 percent). 32 percent find posting embarrassing pictures and videos particularly stressful.

“The faster the victims get trustworthy help from parents, friends, schools, police or advice centers, the better,” said Barmer CEO Christoph Straub. “The victims must not be left alone.”

The dangerous thing about cyberbullying

Cyberbullying is a form of bullying that takes place on the Internet. The problem with this is the fact that those affected cannot actively avoid the attack. On the other hand, news, photos and videos spread incredibly quickly via social media. Once sent, they are almost impossible to stop.

Threats, rumors and insults can spread so much more quickly than in the “real” world. The bad thing: Nobody can say exactly how often the relevant messages were actually seen or heard.
