INTERVIEW – The climatologist has been co-chair since 2015 of one of the three IPCC working groups. She participated last week in the adoption of the summary of the 6e report of the international organization.
LE FIGARO. – The text published Monday by the IPCC puts an end to the evaluation cycle started in 2015. What is its main message ?
Valerie MASSON-DELMOTTE. – This document shows us to what extent, if we continue with current trends, we cannot ensure that we have a livable and sustainable world. Three points are important. First of all, urgency: what we put in place now will make a difference and will have an impact on the losses and damages that we will avoid, on our daily lives, on the irreversible consequences in the longer term, such as the rise in sea level. This text also highlights the seriousness of the situation, in particular for the most vulnerable, with commitments that do not put us at all on a trajectory allowing us to limit global warming to + 1.5°C and make it very difficult to achieve the +2°C target.
