Specialized agents of the General Directorate of Customs dismantled an attempt to smuggle collectible coins, of notable heritage value. The procedure took place during routine checks at the train terminal of the Argentina – Paraguay International Service, which connects the cities of Posadas and Encarnación.

The customs personnel were inspecting tourists who wanted to enter Argentina, when it was the turn of a man, an Argentine citizen.

Customs agents noticed that in the passenger’s luggage there were a large number of small, round plastic containers—they were empty. When asked by the agency’s inspectors, the man hurriedly said: “I found them on the street, I liked them and I grabbed them,” trying to ignore the objects.

Customs personnel carried out a deeper control

However, the Argentine citizen’s response aroused the suspicions of the customs guards, so they decided to carry out a deeper check on his luggage. In fact, when they opened the interior pockets of the suitcase they found a large number of coins of different sizes and colors, whose dimensions coincided with those of the containers.

After the discovery, it was found that there were no less than 20 platinum coins, 34 silver and 6 gold coins—some the size of an adult’s hand. The man was not able to explain the origin of the merchandise and did not have the documentation to support its legal entry into the country.

The pieces, valued at $9,816,677, were seized for constituting a violation of the Baggage Regime—established in article 489 of the Customs Code—and were placed at the disposal of Justice. Likewise, under the terms of article 977 of Law N 22,415, the fine applied by Customs could amount to $29,450,031.
