Sources from the customs have informed the new government that for the first time the titular head Bankova has not appointed her deputy to the post while she is not at work. This causes problems not only in the normal work of the customs, but there is no one to write off the payment of the salaries of the agency’s employees.
The “Customs” agency was surprisingly left without a chief after Petya Bankova, appointed 40 days ago by the former finance minister Asen Vassilev, was arrested last week in an operation by DANS and the anti-corruption commission. Charges were brought against her for connections with smugglers from the Nikolay Nikolov-Paskala channel. On Saturday, the Sofia City Court left her in custody.
The name of the Chief Secretary of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Zhivko Kotsev, was also implicated in the investigation. He is currently in hospital, and according to unofficial information, prosecutors are waiting for him to recover in order to file charges against him.
