On Thursday, September 5, the officials of the “Rēzekne II” customs control point (MKP) conducted an in-depth control of the ferrochrome cargo based on the suspicion of hiding undeclared goods in the container. During this, it was found that cardboard boxes with cigarettes were hidden under a layer of iron and chrome alloy pieces. The packages contained a total of 6,000 packs of cigarettes, or 120,000 “NZ Gold” cigarettes with Belarusian excise tax stamps.
On the other hand, on September 5, officials of Terekhova MKP, while performing customs control of a truck that had entered from Russia, found a hiding place for contraband cigarettes in the structure of the vehicle. In the analysis of the images obtained from the scan, the customs officials identified a suspicious place in the refrigeration equipment located at the front of the semi-trailer, so the vehicle was sent for in-depth control. When the protective panels were dismantled, it was found that cigarettes were hidden in the device. As a result of the control, 1,500 packs of cigarettes or 30,000 “NZ Gold” cigarettes with Belarusian excise stamps were seized.
On Thursday, September 5, officials of the Pāternieku MKP also found a hiding place for contraband cigarettes in the structure of the vehicle. Based on the results of the automated risk analysis, the car, which entered from Belarus, was directed to be checked with the X-ray machine for cargo control. Analyzing the scanned images, the customs expert suspected a hidden undeclared item in the engine compartment of the refrigeration unit of the semi-trailer. When dismantling the protective panels, cigarettes were found. There were 1,499 packs of cigarettes or 29,980 “Queen Superslims” cigarettes with Belarusian excise tax stamps in the hiding place.
The unpaid amount of taxes in the state budget for such a total amount of cigarettes is approximately 42,000 euros.
During the customs control, when signs of a criminal offense were found – smuggling of tobacco products in a significant amount, the case materials were handed over to the Tax and Customs Police Department of the SRS for decision-making on the initiation of criminal proceedings.
