CXMT Becomes China’s Most Valuable Company After Explosive IPO Surge

Shares of chipmaker CNBC (CXMT) surged more than 500% during its market debut on Monday, catapulting the company to become the most valuable China-listed company. The Hefei-based firm overtook the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), which was previously the market’s heavyweight, according to reporting from AOL.

CXMT Becomes China’s Most Valuable Company After Explosive IPO Surge

Trading on Shanghai’s tech-heavy STAR Market, CXMT shares reached 54.65 yuan mid-session compared to an IPO pricing of 8.66 yuan per share. This rally lifted the company’s market capitalization to 3.65 trillion yuan (approximately $539.21 billion), according to AOL. Other reports estimated the market capitalization at 3.3 trillion yuan, or nearly $490 billion.

Asia’s Largest IPO of the Year

The listing represents Asia’s biggest IPO so far this year. CXMT raised 57.92 billion yuan ($8.6 billion), marking the biggest mainland Chinese semiconductor offering on record and surpassing the $7.5 billion SMIC sale in 2020. If an over-allotment option is fully utilized, proceeds could rise to 66.61 billion yuan, according to AOL.

The company, founded in 2016 by Chairman Zhu Yiming, intends to use the IPO proceeds to enhance core competitiveness and technological capabilities, specifically regarding R&D projects and memory wafer mass production. Only 6.73% of the enlarged share capital was freely tradable at listing, a small initial float that AOL reports could magnify price swings. During the morning session, 122 billion yuan worth of shares were traded, making CXMT the first A-share stock to exceed 100 billion yuan in daily turnover.

Market Position and AI Demand

CXMT specializes in DRAM chips used in servers, smartphones, and other electronic devices. According to its IPO prospectus, the company held a 7.67% share of the global DRAM market in 2025. While the global market is dominated by Micron Technology, SK Hynix, and Samsung Electronics, Reuters reports that CXMT has risen to become the world’s fourth-biggest maker of memory.

Chinese Chip Giant CXMT Debuts After $9.8 Billion IPO

The company has leveraged the global buildout of AI data centers to gain significant pricing power. Reuters reports that CXMT recently signed a five-year agreement with ByteDance, the Chinese owner of TikTok, worth more than $7 billion. Additionally, reports indicated that Apple has begun testing CXMT’s DRAM for devices sold in China.

Financial performance has shifted rapidly. CXMT swung to an operating profit of 35.43 billion yuan in the first quarter, recovering from a loss of 2.83 billion yuan the previous year. The company expects a net profit between 66 billion yuan and 75 billion yuan, reversing a prior year’s loss.

Geopolitical Stakes and Risks

The company’s rise coincides with Beijing’s push for semiconductor self-sufficiency. Morningstar noted that as AI becomes a national security issue for China, CXMT is likely to be a key beneficiary, though its technology still lags behind global leaders.

However, the company faces significant international pressure. The Pentagon has designated CXMT as a Chinese military company, alleging it aids China’s military-civil fusion strategy—a charge the company denies. While its counterpart YMTC is already on the U.S. Entity List, Apple has reportedly sought assurances that CXMT will not be placed on that list, according to Reuters.

Some analysts warn of a potential bubble. Yuan Yuwei, a hedge fund manager at Trinity Synergy Investments, told AOL that the stock smells of speculation and is too expensive. Theodore Shou, CEO at Yiyi Capital, told CNBC that while the business is sustainable, the current high margins and net profitability must normalize over a cycle, warning that the market may be at a peak regarding the demand and supply imbalance.
