The FBI’s email servers have been hacked and tens of thousands of people have been sent emails saying ‘you are a victim of a cyber attack’. The FBI has announced this in an official statement. It is reported that fake messages have been sent to over one lakh mail IDs. The hackers misused the FBI’s legal email systems. At the same time, the preliminary conclusion is that the hackers did not try to send the message by adding any security threat links in the mails and that it may have been an attempt to intimidate people. Krebs on Security reported that the hacker contacted Krebs on Security after sending the emails and said that he did it to convince them of problems with the FBI’s email system. The FBI said in a statement that the hacker was able to access the Law Enforcement Enterprise Portal (Leap) due to a software problem.
The official statement said that no one was able to access the information on the FBI network because it was not part of the corporate email service.
