A cyber attack knocked out Internet, phone, email and other systems at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport for a third day, as airport officials investigated the outage and restored full service.
“We are working every day to get the necessary systems back online and to mitigate the impact on our passengers,” said Lance Little, director of the airport’s aviation department, in a press conference Sunday.
He added that the airport is conducting an investigation with the help of outside experts and working closely with federal counterparts, including the Transportation Security Administration and Customs and Border Protection.
Officials did not disclose details of the full scope of the breach, but Little said it did not affect the security department’s ability to screen passengers, but it did disrupt the airport’s baggage sorting system.
The airport warned travelers to allow extra time at the airport and use airline mobile applications to obtain boarding passes and baggage tags if they can.
However, many travelers faced longer-than-usual lines for security checks, long waiting times at baggage claim and check-in, and some found it difficult to find their designated gate.
The Seattle-Tacoma Airport administration wrote on its Facebook page, “Airport crews continue to make progress in restoring systems, but we have not been able to determine a specific date to return to normal operation.”
