Jacopo Venzo, a 17-year-old Italian cyclist, died following a fall during the first stage of the Junioren Rundfahrt in Austria, the European Cycling Union (UEC) announced on Saturday. “There are no words to describe this tragedy,” the UEC said on its Twitter account.
The Italian crashed on Friday during the first leg between Haid and Marchtrenk. The Campana Imballaggi Geo & Tex Trentino runner succumbed to his serious injuries overnight, according to the Austrian press agency (APA).
Venzo was riding alone on the descent of the Mistelbacher, about 40 kilometers northeast of Vienna, when he left the road in a long left turn. Immediately rescued by race doctors, he was then airlifted to Kepler University Hospital in Linz. Unfortunately, the doctors could not save his life.

Jacopo Venzo, originally from Cartigliano (Vicenza), was born on June 29, 2006 and had joined his new team this year from Velo Junior Nove (Vicenza): it was his first season as a junior.
Bringing together more than 140 runners, the event reserved for juniors which was to end on Sunday has been canceled and psychological support has been put in place for all young participants.

The entire Campana Imballaggi Geo & Tex Trentino team hugs his family, his friends and all those who loved Jacopo at this moment of immense sadness. We ask that the privacy of the family be respected and we thank all those who make us feel their support. We now have one more angel to protect us up there. Goodbye Jacopo, thank you for the good times we spent together. You can’t imagine how much we will miss you, ”continues the moving message from his team.
This death comes five weeks after that, among professionals, of the Swiss Gino Mäder. Member of the Bahrain-Victorious team, the latter died on June 16 at the age of 26, following a fall in a descent during the 5th stage of the Tour de Suisse.
