Reichenhainer Strasse: The first Chemnitz bicycle street went into operation in spring between Lutherstrasse and the university campus. The approximately 900-meter-long section is now primarily owned by cyclists. You can even drive next to each other there. Those who travel by car, on the other hand, have to subordinate themselves and must not travel faster than 30 km / h. At the start, the city put up large posters to draw attention to the innovations. The ADFC cycling club suggested additional pictograms on the road, like those on both sides at the beginning of the bicycle street.

Schloßstraße: A further bicycle road is currently being built on the section between Theunertstrasse and the sports hall at Schloßteich and in the area of the bridge between the stump of Brückenstrasse and Schloßstrasse. Together with the already established adjacent routes (for example along Fabrikstrasse), this creates an almost continuous link between two large cycle paths – the Chemnitztal cycle path in the north and the cycle path along the Kappelbach to the west. Traffic planner Alexander Kirste from the city’s civil engineering department is optimistic that there will be more bicycle roads in the city in the foreseeable future. Investigations are already ongoing for Uferstrasse and Adelsbergstrasse as well as on the Kaßberg.

Projektroute Numic: Along a route from Zeisigwald to the Sportforum over the Yorck area, Gablenz and Bernsdorf, the city and scientists from the Technical University are currently investigating together with interested Chemnitz people how improvements for cyclists and pedestrians will affect mobility behavior. The city administration was already active in some places along the route and made improvements with minor interventions, such as the connection between Reichenhainer and Eislebener Strasse and the crossing of Augustusburger Strasse. The results of the investigation are to be incorporated into future projects on pedestrian and bicycle traffic in Chemnitz. www.numic.city

Premium cycle path Küchwald – Wüstenbrand: With a total length of 13.5 kilometers, the future, up to four meters wide, cycle connection along a former railway line is currently considered a showcase project for Chemnitz traffic planners when it comes to cycling. The construction of the first section from Rudolf-Krahlstrasse to Kalkstrasse is expected to begin in September. Another section to Paul-Jäkel-Straße is to follow from 2024, provided that the city council provides more money. In addition, the city is trying to get funding for two more sections to Rabenstein. According to the city, the money had actually already been promised for the spring, but there are now apparently delays in providing it. It is therefore uncertain whether, as recently hoped, construction can begin this year.

Wüstenbrand footpath / bike path – Lugau: In Mittelbach, construction work is underway between the local industrial park and the city limits of Wüstenbrand for the 900-meter-long second section of the cycle path, which one day should lead to Lugau. The section should be completed in the spring of next year. Cost: around 650,000 euros. The sidewalk and bike path is 2.50 meters wide, paved and essentially runs along the embankment of an earlier railway line. It is also quite popular with skaters.

Cycle path to Erdmannsdorf: A two-and-a-half meter wide cycle path is to be built along Augustusburger Strasse on the landward side – initially from the Südring to the former Schere inn, and in perspective over the full six kilometers to Erdmannsdorf. Since the route runs along a state road, the Free State is largely responsible for the project. The city takes care of the area on the southern network. According to the State Office for Road Construction and Transport (Lasuv), however, the project will drag on for a few years. “We are currently in the draft planning phase, in which the preferred variant of the cycle path determined in the preliminary planning is being further specified,” explains a spokesman. This phase is expected to drag on until the autumn of next year. Then the approval planning and a plan approval procedure are pending. Only then is there a building permit.

Closing the gap between Kaßberg and Altendorf: A comparatively small intervention with a big impact: In an extension of Rudolf-Marek-Strasse, an approximately 125-meter-long cross-connection between the districts of Kaßberg and Altendorf is to be established between Horst-Menzel- and Erzbergerstrasse. The long detours that have been popular there until now are no longer necessary. The cost: around 200,000 euros. It is unclear whether the work can start this year as hoped. According to the head of civil engineering, Bernd Gregorzyk, there was no final commitment for the requested funding at the beginning of the month.

Cycle path at Kircheck Klaffenbach: With the help of a funding program of the Free State, the city in the southernmost part of Chemnitz wants to expand the connection from the moated castle to Adorfer Straße as a cycle path. The plans for this have long been in the drawer, but so far there has always been a lack of funding. If everything goes well, construction work could start this year, they say.

Zwönitztal walking and cycling path: In the discussion for years, the implementation of the connection in the direction of Einsiedel and Dittersdorf continues to be difficult. The town hall estimates that the construction of the first section in Erfenschlag could begin in 2024 at the earliest. There is already a draft plan for the 750 meters from Lengefelder Straße to the roller mill. The nature conservation authority is currently examining the project; the civil engineering department is preparing a plan approval procedure. The effort is necessary because the route crosses the future railway line of the Chemnitz model to Thalheim and Aue. The construction should not least increase the traffic safety for students of the Einsiedler high school.

Wheel protection lanes Park of the Victims of Fascism: Currently still more of a provisional solution, the cycle lane between Theresenstrasse and Zschopauer Strasse, which was created in the course of construction work, is to become a permanent facility. The yellow marking will be replaced by a white one, and the traffic lights will be modified accordingly. The previous parking spaces for cars are thus permanently eliminated on one side of the street.

Cyclist-friendly traffic lights at Stadlerplatz: At Stadlerplatz, the civil engineering department installed detectors in the road area in front of the Lutherstraße intersection in the paving of Reichenhainer Straße. The sensors report to the traffic lights at the intersection when cyclists are approaching. If you have reached the intersection, the traffic light is in the best case already green so that you can continue cycling without stopping. If the technology proves itself, the installation of such wheel detectors is also conceivable elsewhere in the city in the future, according to the Technical Town Hall.

Road of Nations: For years, cyclists have been waiting for a gap in the cycle path network to be closed between Brückenstrasse and Georgstrasse. Many of them use the sidewalks, which is sometimes less popular with the owners of the shops on the street. Considerations to set up cycle lanes on both sides have meanwhile been discarded. In return, motorists would have less space, which would have led to problems in the flow of traffic, especially at the junction with Carolastraße. In the town hall, however, a new attempt is already being planned – depending on which of the discussed variants will ultimately be implemented in the course of the new construction of a tram route (Chemnitz model, level 4, according to Limbach-Oberfrohna).

Chemnitz – Limbach-Oberfrohna cycle expressway: As one of the first cities in Saxony, Chemnitz signed a cooperation agreement with the Free State in April to jointly plan a high-speed cycle route. It is supposed to connect Chemnitz and Limbach-Oberfrohna and would be the first of its kind in the region. The special feature: A high-quality design should enable consistently safe and comfortable driving at high speeds. In a feasibility study directed by the State Office for Road Construction and Transport (Lasuv), the first step is to find a suitable route – from the city limits to the center. The first results of the investigation should be available in the course of next year at the earliest, according to Dresden. After the state parliament recently passed the state budget for this and next year, the planning services can now be put out to tender.
