Belgian Remco Evenepoel retained his time trial world title by beating two Italians, Filippo Ganna and Edoardo Affini, on the 46.1 km course on Sunday, September 22 in Zurich. The big favorite of the event, Fleming became the first runner in history to win the Olympic and world time trial title in the same year, a feat also achieved a few hours earlier by Australian Grace Brown in the women’s race. “It’s crazy, I got back into shape at one point. But it’s probably the most complicated time trial of my career,” said the Belgian, who just had time to raise his hand to cross the line with six seconds ahead of Ganna, already in second place at the Paris Olympics.
