Chennai: Cyclone Mandus caused heavy damage in Tamil Nadu. Cyclone Mandus is an extreme low pressure formed in the southwest Bay of Bengal. The cyclone that crossed the coast at Mamallapuram caused damage in the city and nearby areas. Mandus reached the coast last night.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin said 400 trees in the city were uprooted when the wind gusted to a speed of 70 kmph. Stalin also informed that four people died in the state due to the damage caused by the cyclone. After reviewing the situation in the Kasimedu area, the Chief Minister informed that the situation was foreseen and all preventive measures have been taken.

25,000 volunteers have been deployed in the affected areas. The Chief Minister also pointed out that 22 subways in the city have been waterlogged so that vehicular traffic is running smoothly. Rescue operations are also being carried out in the nearby districts of Chengalpet, Kancheepuram and Villupuram. Electricity was cut off in 600 places due to damage to electric poles and transformers in the cyclone.

An exact estimate of the damage in the state is yet to be recorded. The Chief Minister informed that central assistance will be sought if necessary. Relief centers have been set up in the state. The State Revenue and Disaster Management Minister had informed that more than 9000 people are staying in 205 relief centres. As soon as the typhoon warning came, the people living in huts in the coastal areas were shifted to the relief center.

Heavy rains are also likely in Kerala under the influence of Cyclone Mandus. According to the notification of the Central Meteorological Department, rains may intensify in Kerala for the next 3 days. According to this, yellow alert has been issued in various districts of Kerala on 11th, 12th and 13th. Yellow alert has been announced in 5 districts on Sunday and 9 districts on Monday and Tuesday. Along with this, the Central Meteorological Department has also informed that you should not go for fishing on December 12 and December 13 in Kerala-Karnataka-Lakshadweep coasts.
