Chennai: According to the first calculation, damage worth Rs.700 crore has been caused in Chennai due to Cyclone Mandus.

Cyclone ‘Montus’ made landfall near Mamallapuram, next to Chennai. As a result, heavy winds and rains lashed Chennai and its suburbs. Chennai Municipal Corporation Mayor Priya, Chennai Municipal Corporation Deputy Mayor Mahesh Kumar, Commissioner Gagandeep Singh Bedi, Chief Engineer Rajendran and Deputy Commissioners were involved in the field work early in the morning to facilitate immediate repair of the damage caused by the storm.

Even though Chennai received more than 15 cm of rain in these two days, most of the roads did not get stagnant. But due to the storm, strong winds blew in Chennai. As a result, more than 400 trees were uprooted. Also, more than 200 tree branches fell. More than 150 street poles, more than 200 roads and more than 15 bus stands were damaged.

More than 50,000 people from Chennai Corporation and Police Department were involved in the field work. Due to this, the fallen trees on the road were immediately removed so as not to disturb the traffic. Therefore, city buses and vehicles were operated as usual today (Dec. 10).

Corporation officials said, “The damage value in Chennai has been estimated at Rs 700 crore in the first phase. After a day or two, the total damage value will be calculated and submitted to the government. Steps have been taken to start immediate rehabilitation work in the damaged areas. It has been estimated that 400 trees have fallen so far. Also, some places may not be accounted for.” .The work of calculating them is ongoing,” he said.
