Cyclone ‘Mikjam’ Causes Heavy Rain and Flooding in Chennai

Chennai is currently experiencing heavy rain and flooding as Cyclone ‘Mikjam’ approaches. The storm, located in the Bay of Bengal about 190 km east of Chennai, is moving at a speed of 8 kmph and is expected to move northwesterly towards North Tamil Nadu and South Andhra Pradesh before making landfall between Nellore-Masulipatnam on the evening of the 5th.

In response to the storm, a ‘red alert’ for heavy rain has been issued by the Meteorological Department for three districts of Chennai, Chengalpattu, and Tiruvallur. The continuous heavy rain has caused widespread flooding in the city and suburbs, with water stagnant in various parts of Chennai.

Efforts to address the flooding are underway, with Corporation employees working to evacuate the stagnant water. Drainage work is also being carried out in affected areas, with Minister Udayanidhi Stalin personally inspecting the rainwater drainage work on Rayapetta VP Raman Road. Municipal Corporation Mayor Priya and other officials also conducted inspections of the affected areas.

The situation is being closely monitored as the city prepares for the impact of Cyclone ‘Mikjam’.Residents are advised to stay indoors and take necessary precautions as the storm approaches.
