The Cypriot Department of Public Works has completed a study aimed at reducing the speed limit from 50 km/h to 30 km/h in urban areas with the aim of reducing traffic, pollution and road accidents. This research has been supported by the Road Safety Council, which also wants to reduce these speed limits in cities as a strategy to reduce the number of traffic accidents. According to their data, in Cyprus 60% of these accidents occur in residential areas.
The proposal derived from the study carried out by Public Works includes “calming” traffic with this reduction in the most conflictive areas of the main cities of Cyprus: in the Kaimakli and Aglantzia neighborhoods of the city of Nicosia (the capital of Cyprus), in three areas of the city of Limassol (the second largest on the island), in an area of the municipality of Mesa Geitonia and in the center of Larnaca (the third largest city in Cyprus).
The recommendation of this study is to opt for the reduction of the speed limit in these areas since a decrease from the current 50 km/h to 30 km/h will not only not affect traffic but would have a positive effect, such as encouraging the use of bicycles and scooters and promote a more sustainable form of mobility.
The idea of reducing the speed limit is also supported by the Traffic Department of the Cypriot Police, which points out that each 10% reduction in the speed limit achieves a 20% reduction in traffic accidents.
