“If the first stage (of construction of the Dukovany nuclear power plant) goes well, I think it is very likely that we will continue cooperation with the same partner.”

Czech President Petr Pavel said in a media interview on the 19th (local time), “We still consider Korea’s proposal to be the best in all evaluation criteria.” He hinted at the possibility that Korea will win the bid for the construction of Temelin nuclear power plants Units 3 and 4, which Czech authorities are planning to order in addition to Dukovany Units 5 and 6 worth 24 trillion won. Czech Prime Minister Petr Piala also mentioned the possibility of Korea winning the bid for the Temelin nuclear power plant on the 20th.

Accordingly, when the final contract for the Dukovany nuclear power plant project is signed in March next year, it is expected to not only expand cooperation in nuclear power plant projects between Korea and the Czech Republic, but also serve as a bridgehead for advancing into nuclear power plant projects in third countries such as the Netherlands and Poland.

Czech President: “Considering Additional Nuclear Power Plants and Cooperation with Korea” Yoon: “Now Team Czech Korea”

President Yoon and President Pavel met for five hours, starting with an official welcoming ceremony at Prague Castle in Prague, Czech Republic, at 6:15 p.m. on the 19th, followed by a summit meeting and an official dinner. In a joint press conference after the meeting, President Pavel said, “This (Dukovany nuclear power plant project) bid is a very important opportunity for Czech industry,” and “Korean companies that have advanced into the Czech Republic have created 15,000 jobs. If a contract for the construction of a new nuclear power plant is signed, the job creation effect will be even greater.”

However, the intellectual property dispute between Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power and Westinghouse in the United States is considered a last-minute variable in the final contract. Regarding this, President Yoon said, “The governments of Korea and the United States share a firm consensus on nuclear power cooperation,” and “We believe and are confident that this issue can be resolved well, just like the Barakah nuclear power plant in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).” President Pavel also said, “I believe that the issue will be resolved successfully,” and “We are considering a bad scenario, but the probability is not that high.”

A senior government official met with reporters in the Czech Republic and said, “The (Westinghouse) issue has not been completely resolved yet,” but added, “At a time when the expression ‘global nuclear renaissance’ is being used, there is deep agreement that Korea and the U.S. should work together to establish a joint partnership.”

● Signing of MOU for cooperation throughout the entire cycle of nuclear power plant construction and operation

On the morning of the 20th, the second day of his visit to the Czech Republic, President Yoon attended the Korea-Czech Republic Business Forum and said, “Now, let’s go beyond ‘Team Korea’ and become ‘Team Czech-Korea’ and achieve a ‘nuclear renaissance’ together.” He added, “We must continue the momentum of cooperation in the nuclear power sector to the entire industry.”

President Yoon then traveled to Plzen with Prime Minister Piala to attend the ‘Nuclear Power Plant Full Cycle Cooperation Agreement Ceremony’ held at Doosan Skoda Power. Doosan Skoda Power is a company that has supplied turbines to 26 nuclear power plants in Europe, including the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Finland, and Germany, and was acquired by Doosan Energy in 2009.

President Yoon and Prime Minister Fiala signed 13 memorandums of understanding (MOUs), including one to use turbines produced by Doosan Skoda Power once the final contract for the Dukovany nuclear power plant project is signed, and together signed the blades to be installed on the turbines. Prime Minister Fiala said in his congratulatory speech, “I have no doubt that (the turbines and blades) will be supplied to other nuclear power plants in the Czech Republic and even internationally,” adding, “After the construction of the Dukovany and Temelin nuclear power plants, the relationship between the Czech Republic and Korea will become even stronger, and there will be ample opportunities for further cooperation.”
