The Constitutional Commission of the Czech Senate will hold a meeting on October 19 to discuss the issue of declaring hospitalized President Milos Zeman incapable of performing his powers. The chairman of the commission, Zdenek Graba, announced the convening of the meeting on Tuesday.

Senators will consider various options for terminating Zeman’s powers, including article 66 of the constitution – declaring the president incapable of performing his functions.

“I wish the president a speedy recovery, but we are in a situation where clear procedures are needed,” wrote he’s on Twitter. “We cannot afford to paralyze constitutional institutions precisely because of possible complications from the head of state.”

Deputy Prime Minister Karel Havlicek criticized the decision of the Senate to hold a meeting of the commission on the possibility of serving as a hospitalized president of the republic.

“It would be premature, insensitive and wrong. I see this as a political pressure and a desire to assert itself. All this is very tasteless! ” – said Gavlicek, commenting on the words of Graba.

Zeman, 77, who suffers from diabetes and uses a wheelchair, was hospitalized on Sunday and is currently in the intensive care unit of the Central Military University Hospital in Prague. On Monday, a hospital spokeswoman told reporters that the president’s condition had stabilized.

The politician, who has been in office since 2013, was hospitalized the day after the elections to the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Parliament ended. In the elections, the ANO movement of the incumbent Prime Minister Babis, to whom Zeman is loyal, was defeated. According to the Czech constitution, the president must propose to parliament a candidate for the post of head of government.
