The LKL management invited the bronze medalist of the Sydney Olympic Games in order to strengthen the cooperative relationship between Betsafe-LKL clubs and LKL referees.
D. Maskoliūnas will be responsible for coordinating the activities of the referees’ department, will participate in referees’ and clubs’ meetings, will coordinate the refereeing analysis activities of “Betsafe-LKL” and Citadele KMT matches, will travel and observe the matches live, and will maintain constant contact with the representatives of the clubs regarding refereeing quality issues.
Speaking about such a decision, the Sydney Olympic bronze medalist said that he did not make the decision immediately.
“We were in constant contact with Remigius Milašius, the president of the Lithuanian Basketball League, during the season. Together we discussed and analyzed different situations, we often communicated both during and after the matches.
When I received a specific offer to join LKL, I won’t hide it – I was quite surprised, I had to think a lot, so I didn’t answer right away.
After delving into what was expected of me, I decided that I could really be useful. The main idea and goal is to find the golden mean of communication between the league referees, coaches, players and LKL management. Of course, coaches will always have something to cling to when talking about the referees’ work, and the referees will probably not avoid mistakes either, but I will do my best to make the communication between these two camps as professional as possible,” said D. Maskoliūnas.
The initiator of such addition to the LKL team – LKL president R. Milašius, was happy with another non-standard decision.
“A person joins the team who has been in different camps – both as a player and as a coach. I know how he communicates with team managers, players, coaches – this man has impressive experience in his career and I believe that this unusual decision will work”, said R. Milašius.
