Trump kissed Sara Netanyahu on both cheeks, shook the longtime prime minister’s hand, then both posed for a photo with the thumbs up, footage the former president posted on social media showed.

Netanyahu posted a photo online of himself standing next to Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort, holding a hat that read “TOTAL VICTORY”.

The tone of the meeting was quite different from Netanyahu’s meeting with presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris the previous day. During it, the vice president told the Israeli prime minister that he must sign a peace deal in the Gaza Strip and insisted she would “not remain silent” about the suffering in the Palestinian enclave.

Netanyahu has enjoyed a much warmer relationship with Trump than with current President Joe Biden and is at odds with the Democratic administration over issues such as civilian casualties in the Gaza Strip and the pace of US arms deliveries to Israel.

In a speech to the US Congress this week, the Israeli leader praised Trump’s actions while he was US president. “I want to thank President Trump for everything he has done for Israel. From recognizing Israel’s sovereignty in the Golan Heights and repelling Iranian aggression to recognizing Jerusalem as our capital and moving the American embassy to Jerusalem,” Netanyahu said.
