The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Government of National Unity denied that the Libyans detained in South Africa were affiliated with the government or that the ministry had any connection to the procedures for sending them or assigning them any mission, whether training or otherwise.

The ministry said in a statement that the Government of National Unity followed the statement issued by the South African police, which reported the arrest of 95 people of Libyan nationality today, Friday, after raiding a place used as a military base in the city of White River in the Mpumalanga province, about 360 km northeast of Johannesburg, and noted that it is following this incident with great concern and extreme care.

The statement indicated that the Libyan Military Prosecutor General and the Libyan Embassy in South Africa were assigned to communicate with the relevant authorities in Johannesburg to follow up on the circumstances of this case.

The Ministry confirmed its readiness to participate in the investigations to uncover the circumstances of the case and the parties behind it, while ensuring the safety of the detained citizens and their treatment in accordance with the relevant international agreements and procedures.

In its statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed its condemnation of all acts that threaten the peace, security or sovereignty of neighboring, friendly and sisterly countries, stressing that such cross-border interventions, for which the Libyan people have paid the price in terms of their security, strength and stability, have been overcome by Libya long ago.

The Ministry also condemned the involvement of the country’s sons in such acts, stressing that it will follow up with the Republic of South Africa on all investigations related to this incident to uncover its circumstances, those involved in it, and the parties behind it.
