The head of the Government of National Unity, Abdul Hamid Dabaiba, expressed Libya’s reservations about the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, which was approved by the United Nations General Assembly in 2018, considering that it aims to legitimize irregular migration, confuse concepts between refugees and migrants, and distinguish between countries of port, transit and origin.
During his speech at the opening of the regional conference on safe migration in the Arab region at the headquarters of the Arab League, Dabaiba said that Libya, due to its geographical location, remains a transit country for migrants of various nationalities to Europe, which is accompanied by many complications that have imposed heavy burdens on them, especially in the security aspect.
Dbeibah added that Libya intends to launch a national strategy for border security and management in cooperation with international partners, praising the efforts made to reduce migration and coordination with regional countries and affected European countries to develop a strategy to regulate this issue.
Dabaiba indicated that Libya intends to host the Trans-Mediterranean Migration Forum on July 17, with the participation of relevant European and African countries.
