An inquest has laid bare the tragic circumstances surrounding the death of Tyron Riley, a 31-year-old father of six, who was found fatally stabbed in a Salford alleyway. The hearing revealed a stark contrast between the “hard-working and talented” man remembered by his family and the life spiraling out of control due to drug abuse and mounting debt.
A Life Unraveling
The inquest heard how Riley’s final two years were marred by issues that did not reflect “the measure of the man he was.” His mother, Nicola Derbyshire, accompanied by her partner, bravely recounted her son’s life to Bolton Coroners Court, struggling to hold back tears. She revealed that tyron was tragically unable to confide in her directly about his struggles with cocaine and the debts he had accumulated.
Described as “hilarious,” “hardworking,” and “talented,” Riley was a builder by trade, having worked closely with his grandfather and father. The loss of his father to a sudden cardiac arrest while on a job together deeply affected him, contributing to a period of “self-medicating” and an inability to process his grief. “I don’t think he ever got over that,” Derbyshire told area coroner Michael Pemberton. “He struggled to speak about things and wouldn’t accept any help.”
From Cannabis to Cocaine and Crippling Debt
The court learned that Tyron’s troubles began with recreational cannabis use as a teenager, causing friction within his “very anti-drug” family. This escalated to a reliance on cocaine, which he confessed to his mother in a letter, explaining he “couldn’t tell me face to face.” The resulting “drug debt” became a meaningful burden, with drug dealers reportedly harassing his grandfather.
“One message was that they were going to kneecap him,” Derbyshire testified.”my dad paid the debts all the time.” The financial strain and drug use ultimately led to the breakdown of Tyron’s relationship and a period of isolation, limiting his contact with his six children.
The Night of the Stabbing
On December 27, 2022, Tyron Riley was discovered slumped against a wall in a poorly lit alleyway. Disturbingly, he was found wearing a “homemade balaclava,” a “makeshift gum shield,” and had a “heavy metal pole” across his lap. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A forensic pathologist, Naomi Carter, determined the cause of death to be a “stab wound of the chest” resulting in extensive blood loss. An “unusual finding” was also noted: a “quarter piece of rubber” discovered in his mouth. Toxicology reports revealed traces of cocaine, GHB, and morphine in his system.
Investigation and Aftermath
A murder investigation followed, ultimately leading to the imprisonment of Bradley Waters, who was 17 at the time of the incident, for perverting the course of justice. Waters initially claimed self-defense, stating he acted after tyron attacked him and discovered he was holding a bloodied knife. However, his attempts to conceal evidence – cleaning the weapon with baby wipes, disposing of it in the River Irwell, and burning his clothes – “frustrated” the investigation. He was sentenced to five years in prison in September 2024.
PC charles Smith, one of the first officers on the scene, described the body as appearing “at first to be a mannequin, very thin.” Derbyshire expressed her grief, stating, “They contacted my sister before me…When I went online, I found that a person was found at the park the night before. I just knew that it was him.” She emphasized that while Tyron faced immense challenges in his final years, she wanted his 31 years of life to be remembered beyond those struggles.
Proceedings continue as the inquest delves further into the circumstances surrounding Tyron Riley’s tragic death.
