12 percent fewer cancer deaths

That changed when the researchers again differentiated between a daily low vitamin D3 ration of 400 to 4000 international units (IU) and the administration of high single doses of 60,000 to 120,000 IU monthly (or even less frequently):

A daily dose of vitamin D reduced the risk of dying from cancer by 12 percent. On the other hand, those who received vitamin D infrequently but in high doses did not benefit in this regard.

If vitamin D3 is taken daily, the biological availability of the hormone is continuously ensured – in contrast to the administration of high single doses of vitamin D3. This could explain why daily intake reduces the risk of cancer death, but the high single doses do not.

Notably, the 12 percent reduction in cancer mortality was achieved in groups that included both those with and those without explicit Vitamin D Deficiency comprised. “We can therefore assume that the effect is significantly higher for people who actually have a vitamin D deficiency,” says Schöttker.

People over the age of 70 benefited the most from vitamin D3 therapy. In addition, the effect was most evident when people had started taking vitamin D before their cancer was diagnosed.
