There was certainly a murder and the place where it was committed is also certain, but committed by whom, when and under what circumstances remains to be discovered and verified. There will be time until Sunday to reveal the secret that revolves around ‘The Crime of Via dell’Orsina’, the opera by Eugène Labiche on stage at the Ambra Jovinelli theater in Rome, starring Massimo Daiuto and Antonello Fassari, directed by Andrée Ruth Shammah and interpreters of two characters who the fate of life has completely reversed in the social hierarchies compared to the school ones when they attended the same class: with ‘the donkey’ who has become rich, elegant and respected and ‘the nerd’ who is desperate, rude and vulgar .

The two men wake up one morning in the same bed, in the rich man’s house complete with wife and servants, with dirty hands and pockets full of coal, no longer remembering anything of what happened the night before, after the invitation to a reunion of former students. When reading a newspaper they learn that a young charcoal burner has been killed, they convince themselves that they were the ones who committed the murder, perhaps because they were drunk and out of their minds. At that point, the two are willing to do anything, even kill, to avoid paying the consequences of the crime they believe they have committed together.

“The first work done on Labiche’s text was the translation and it was decided to move the entire story from nineteenth-century France to post-war Italy – explains director Shammah – Then there was the adaptation, inserting within this one-act elements taken from other works by Labiche, such as the presence of the two waiters, to enrich the show with some aspects of life: the confrontation between a young man and an old man, the handover from one generation to the ‘other, the double point of view on the present era”.
