Dakin Humane Society to Host Reduced-Fee Pet Adoption Event July 11-12
A significant reduction in adoption fees and waived costs for certain animals will be available at the Dakin Humane Society in Springfield, Massachusetts, on July 11 and 12, as the organization seeks to find homes for a growing number of animals in need. The event is timed to coincide with the peak summer season for animal shelter intakes and aims to connect pets with loving families during a period when more people have the time to provide care.
Addressing Capacity Challenges with ASPCA Support
The adoption event is made possible through grant funding from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), as part of its National Shelter Initiative. This initiative directly addresses the increasing strain on animal shelters nationwide, which are facing challenges related to capacity, staffing shortages, and rising veterinary costs. According to a statement from the organization, the ASPCA’s support will be “transformative” for countless animals and the people who choose to adopt them.
Summer Surge in Animal Needs
Animal shelters typically experience a surge in intakes during the summer months, as more animals require rehoming. This influx can lead to longer wait times for animals to find permanent homes. Dakin Humane Society anticipates a substantial increase in the number of cats and kittens, as well as dogs, arriving from both the local community and recent animal transports. “We’re absolutely thrilled to partner with the ASPCA for this special event that helps kick off a joyful season of adoptions,” said a senior official at Dakin. “This support allows our pets to find loving families quickly, and we are deeply grateful to our local adopters who open their hearts and homes.”
Adoption Details and Comprehensive Care
From 12:30 to 3 p.m. on July 11 and 12, adoption fees for cats and dogs will be reduced by $100. Adoption fees for all other species will be waived entirely. The comprehensive adoption package includes a veterinary examination, spay/neuter surgery, age-appropriate vaccines, a microchip and registration, and species-specific tests and treatments.
Potential adopters are encouraged to view available pets online at dakinhumane.org before visiting the shelter, located at 171 Union St., Springfield, to ensure a smooth and efficient adoption process.
