A dam collapse in northeastern Nigeria has killed 30 people and forced 400,000 to flee amid flooding.

According to AFP and others on the 11th (local time), Nigeria’s National Disaster Management Agency announced that about 40% of the city of Maiduguri was submerged in water when the Alau Dam located on the Nda River in Borno State, northeastern Nigeria, collapsed due to flooding.

“The death toll is 30,” said an official from the National Disaster Management Agency. “People have been forced out of their homes and are scattered everywhere.”

According to government statistics, 414,000 people have been displaced so far.

“So far, one million people have been affected,” said an aide to the Borno governor, adding that the number could rise to as many as two million when the numbers are tallied.

Food prices have soared as markets have been destroyed by floods. A local zoo has also been damaged, with some animals escaping. One Maiduguri resident said residents were afraid to leave their homes after a crocodile was shot dead near their home this morning.

Nigerian authorities have set up eight camps for the displaced and are providing medical services and water trucks.

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has expressed his condolences to those affected by the disaster. Vice President Kassim Shettima, a Maiduguri native, visited the area on the 10th.

The UN refugee agency in Nigeria said the worst floods in 30 years hit Maiduguri the day before. According to the UN, more than 2.3 million people have been affected by the floods so far this year, a threefold increase from last year.

Nigerian authorities have reported that 229 people have died and 380,000 have been displaced by floods since the rainy season began. At least 107,600 hectares of farmland have also been damaged by heavy rains.
