New Delhi:

The Dams Protection Bill was tabled yesterday amid a flurry of opposition in the state legislature. The bill was introduced by Water Resources Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat.

There was a long debate today on this bill. Several state MPs, including from Tamil Nadu, strongly opposed the bill. DMK MP Trichy Siva demanded that the dams protection bill be sent to the select committee. He also said that the power of the states over the dams should not be reduced in any way. After the debate, the Dams Protection Bill 2019 was passed by a voice vote.

While the Dams Protection Bill of 2019 was passed in the Lok Sabha, it has now been passed in the states as well.

The Dam Safety Bill was created to ensure the safety of dams across the country and to protect the dams uniformly. It is noteworthy that the bill has not been passed since 2010 due to opposition from the state governments which have been tabled in various sessions.
