Baghdad / Obelisk Al-Hadath: US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Middle East Affairs Dana Stroul said that the US-Iraqi dialogue defined the features of the next stage, stressing that the United States “does not seek a permanent military presence in Iraq.”

“We are witnessing a new phase of the defense partnership between the United States and Iraq,” Stroll said in a television interview.

“We hope that Iran will not have any voice or influence on decision-makers in the region as a whole,” Stroul said.

Stroll’s remarks came at the end of a visit by a senior Iraqi delegation to Washington headed by Defense Minister Thabet al-Abbasi.

The delegation also included the commander of the Anti-Terrorism Service, Lieutenant General Abdul-Wahhab Al-Saadi, Chief of Staff of the Army, Lieutenant-General Special Forces Abdul-Amir Rashid Yarallah, Deputy Commander of Joint Operations Lieutenant General Qais Al-Muhammadawi, and other senior officials.

In a joint statement issued, the United States and Iraq affirmed their commitment to continue bilateral military cooperation in all fields, especially the fight against ISIS, work to prevent the return of its activity, and training of Iraqi military forces.

The statement, which was issued after meetings that included Abbasi and US Assistant Secretary of Defense Celeste Wander, indicated that the two sides “affirmed their commitment to developing Iraq’s security and defense capabilities and their intention to deepen security cooperation across a full range of issues to advance the two countries’ common interest in Iraq’s security and sovereignty and in the stability of the region.”
