In the dried beans sold by the Tesco chain under its private brand, laboratory analysis of the State Agricultural and Food Inspection found the presence of herbicide in four times the amount permitted by law.

It was about beans grown in Argentina and the non-compliant batch had 1,344 packages, the inspector’s spokesman Pavel Kopřiva said in a press release.

Specifically, it was a half-kilogram package of red beans with a minimum shelf-life date of July 6, 2025. The herbicide haloxyfop, a weed killer, was in the beans at 0.57 milligrams per kilogram, while the permitted limit is 0.15 milligrams per kilogram.

Because of this, the inspection ordered the immediate withdrawal of the batch from all branches and will initiate administrative proceedings with the Tesco chain to impose a fine. At the same time, it advises consumers not to eat these beans.

In the past months, the inspection also revealed other foods from third countries in which the limits for various types of pesticides were exceeded. These are often herbs, spices and teas.
